Regulations are mounting for food importers

FSMA and FSVP are here to stay

For food importers, a New Era of Smarter Food Safety has arrived. The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) significantly enhances the FDA’s ability to oversee the millions of food products coming into the United States from other countries every year.

The ruling requires that importers verify the safety of food from their suppliers and gives the FDA authority to block foods from facilities or countries that refuse inspection. The FDA has also been working more closely with foreign governments and increasing its inspection of foreign food facilities.

An estimated 15 percent of the U.S. food supply is imported, including 50 percent of fresh fruits, 20 percent of fresh vegetables and 80 percent of seafood.

Under FSMA and FSVP, any human or animal food imported into the U.S. must be produced under the same safety standards as food that is produced here. At a baseline level, foods from a foreign country must neither be adulterated nor misbranded with respect to food allergen labeling – and that isn’t possible without a rich level of data at your fingertips.

With FoodLogiQ Connect you can:

  • Access your recordkeeping in the cloud – as required by FSMA Preventive Controls. Easily export documentation when the FDA asks for it.
  • Centralize your compliance requirements in a single platform, and meet the requirements of the Foreign Supplier Verification Program.
  • Monitor your suppliers with audits and assessments, and benchmark their performance. Improve your supply chain over time with actionable data.

Where does your documentation live?

Centralize required documentation

When the FSVP requires that you vouch for your foreign suppliers, documentation and auditing become an indispensable tool in ensuring compliance. Not only do you need the initial documentation when working with a foreign supplier, but regular auditing, whether through your own auditors or a 3rd party, is required for compliance. These documents have to be available for regulators during an investigation. How do you store them?

FoodLogiQ Connect’s robust documentation features give you the control you need to ensure that should the situation arise, you’ll have everything the FDA needs in the case of a recall or other issue. Capture food quality incidents and report them in real-time to your suppliers through workflows and automated communications.

With FoodLogiQ Connect you can:

  • Maintain records in a single, cloud-based platform, ensuring records are up-to-date company wide and readily available.
  • Address quality issues through audits or improvement plans, with documentation of the entire process.
  • Approve all documents and keep track of different versions, saving time and money from inefficient document management.
